Casa Blanca is a Pima indian community on the Gila River reservation. It is located at the site of an ancient Hohokam ruin mound, from the period prior to 1450 A.D. Before the arrival of the Spanish in the 1600's the Pima were prolific grain farmers with thousands of irrigated acres. They supported gold miners on their way to California and soldiers during the Civil War. With the arrival of Anglo settlers their water source, the Gila River, was cutoff. Farming, an ancient way of life, was no longer feasible and the tribe became dependent on government welfare. Older structures, made of adobe and wood have dissolved back into the desert environment. The town of Casa Blanca, today, consists of government services buildings and recently built dwellings of concrete and stucco. Some fields continue to be farmed. Cotton and alfalfa, and sod for encroaching communities, are the current cash crops.
