A local shopping area developed here in 1945 and, unlike most in Houston, it’s never died and has actually grown. Now home to over 150 stores and dozens of restaurants and bars, it’s the closest place to grab food if you’re in the Museum District.

The original Village Arcade, a few blocks at the center of this 15-block shopping area, was torn down and re-developed by Weingarten Realty into a typical strip mall, with typical tenants (Gap, Bath and Body Works, Banana Republic), but the surrounding blocks have retained their charm with unique small stores like British Isles, G&G Model Shop, Purple Glaze pottery, White Buffalo gallery, Candylicious, Learning Express toy store, Houston Numismatic Exchange, and the Bead Shop. The restaurants here are where the near-by workers of the Texas Medical Center come to escape hospital cafeteria food.
