Donald G. Jacobs, a volunteer firefighter with the Reading Bureau of Fire, died on January 28, 1985 in a fire set by an arsonist. The fire, in the Central YMCA at Reed and Washington Streets, also claimed the lives of three residents whom Jacobs was trying to rescue.
The arsonist, Tracy L. Pietrovito, was convicted of four counts of second degree murder along with several other offenses. He was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences but because he was a juvenile at the time, he was resentenced in 2017 to 33 years to life in prison.
The bell in City Park was originally atop the Washington Street Firehouse bears a plaque stating "This bell rests here after sounding alarms from atop the Washington Fire Co. No. 2 for seventy years, 1904-1974. It is displayed in memory of Donald G. Jacobs and all who answered its call."
