Described as the pensive figure of a solitary soldier sitting in the middle of a set of granite steps, the Vietnam War Memorial was erected in 1988. This design was chosen from a design competition in 1986 with 23 entries. The final design shows a solitary military figure with his eyes and mouth hidden so that the viewer can remember the face that they want to see. The names of the 62 KIA and 3 MIA soldiers were rubbed off of the Vietnam Wall in Washington and transferred on to the memorial rock at this site.

A very descriptive journey from the time the idea of the Memorial was conceived till it was actually dedicated can be found at [http://www.vietnamveterans131.com/vietnam-memorial.html]
