"Not all the caldera features are from flows of lava. The 200 foot high pumice castle is an example of the complex, explosive history of Mount Mazama. It is the result of gas rich volcanic eruption that took place here about 70,000 years ago.

Tuff Times.

A glowing avalacnhe deposited numerous layers of hot pumice. As the other layers accumluated the lower sections, compressed into a hard volcanic rock. Welded tuff is the product of this intense heat and compression."
