Eliot School was the first school designed by renowned school architect William B. Ittner, Commissioner of School Buildings, St. Louis Public Schools. He felt that most schools of that era were not designed well for their intended use. Most schools had dimly lit corridors, class rooms too wide for the available light from the windows on one side, no indoor plumbing and in general unsanitary conditions. Eliot School was built in 1898 and was the first school in St. Louis to have indoor plumbing, was adequately heated and ventilated and was the best lighted of school to date. The school building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. The building is currently unused and vacant.
