"It was the scene of one of the allied landing operations in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Located between the beaches of Utah Beach (west) and Omaha Beach (east), the peak had been fortified by the Germans (WN 751) and, according to the Allied air reconnaissance, was equipped with heavy artillery pieces whose range threatened the two neighboring beaches.It was considered essential, for the success of the landing, that the artillery pieces be decommissioned as soon as possible.

Par la suite, les pièces d'artillerie se révèleront avoir été déplacées par les Allemands peu de temps auparavant et installées 1,3 km en arrière, à l'intérieur des terres.
Le toponyme Hoc est issu du vieil anglais hoc qui avait également le sens de « pointe de terre, cap ». Il a donné l'anglais hook « crochet », mais qui conserve également, dans de rares usages, le sens de « cap étroit ». Il s'est hypothétiquement croisé avec l'ancien scandinave haka « menton » employé à l'accusatif, c'est-à-dire höku, et l'ancien scandinave haki « crochet ».
