This old cannon, manufactured in England was brought to Anderson South Carolina from Charleston in 1814 by Luke Hanks Sr. to be used as a means of protection if the War of 1812 threatened Andersonians. "the Old Reformer" which was touched off with a fuse instead of the lanyard of latter days, sounded it's powerful "voice" in December, 1860, when Andersonians received news of the signing of the Ordinance of Secession. During the war, it was sounded in celebration at each Confederate victory. It was last used in a parade in September of 1876, being fired each mile from Pendleton South Carolina to Abbeville South Carolina, rallying the courage of South Carolinians in honor of the campaign of Confederate General Wade Hampton for Governor, which ended reconstruction for South Carolina.
