The gilded equestrian statue of Saint Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc), The Maid of Orléans (ca. 1412 - 1431), a national heroine of France moved to the current place on Place de la Resistance in Caen from Algerian town Oran, where it was placed in front of the local cathedral since 1931 until 1962. The statue was dedicated in Caen on May 1964. Joan of Arc is depicted here sitting on horseback with her left hand holding a victorious flag and with the sword in the other hand.
Joan of Arc, (c.1412-1431) was a peasant girl who had divine visions which not only helped her to persuade the French King to let her lead an army- but also led her to victories during the Hundred Years War. The English eventually got ahold of her and burned her at the stake for supposed heresies. She is considered a national hero in France and was canonized as a Saint in 1920.
