Bennachie is a large area of high ground in the Garioch district of Aberdeenshire some 20 miles north-west of the city of Aberdeen. It rises to 528 metres at Oxen Craig, but its most distinctive feature is the rocky granite tor at the eastern end known as Mither Tap which is a landmark all over the area. There are four car parking areas in the vicinity, with the most easterly being at the Bennachie Visitor Centre, a large building and car park within the forest at the foot of the slopes.
This large sign with a map at the centrepiece is located close to the centre and the 'You are here' can be found here. Orientated in the direction you are facing, which is west, the map outlines the area of Bennachie and depicts the many trails available, which are:
Discovery Trail - A gentle forest trail
Colony Trail - An easy going trail through the pines and fields of the ruined houses of the former colonists of Bennachie.
Mither Tap Timeline Trail - A steep ascent to the granite tor of Mither Tap and the remains of a Pictish Fort.
Turnpike Trail - A trail heading north to the Rowantree car park.
Gordon Way - An 11.5 mile walking route to the Suie car park.
The Bennachie Centre can be reached along a minor road two miles south-west from the village of the Chapel of Garioch.
