Der Roque de Los Muchachos ist mit 2.426 Metern der höchste Berg auf La Palma. Er ist der nordöstliche Teil der Caldera de Taburiente (visit link).
Bei klarem Wetter ist der Ausblick gigantisch. Man schaut aus über 2400 Meter direkt einige hundert Meter tief in die Caldera de Taburiente und bis zum Meer sogar bis auf null Meter hinunter.
Um zu diesem Waymark zu gelangen, muss man die Treppe, die ein Stück vor dem ersten Aussichtspunkt rechts heruntergeht benutzen. Der schmale Pfad der dann zu diesem Aussichtspunkt führt ist zwar mit groben Steinen geflastert, aber bis zum Aussichtspunkt überwiegend nicht an den Abgründen gesichert. Kinder sollten hier nicht ohne Aufsicht der Eltern herumlaufen. Ebenso sollte man trittsicher und schwindelfrei sein. Bei Sturm, Regen, starken Nebel, bei Nacht, Eis oder Schnee ist dieser Waymark nicht erreichbar und es sollten auch keine Versuche unternommen werden diesen Waymark zu besuchen. Dann besteht hier oben Lebensgefahr.
Die Zufahrtsstraße, die auch auf den Gipfel führt, ist jeweils in der Zeit vom 21 Uhr bis 7 Uhr gesperrt (da sie durch das Gelände des Observatoriums führt). Die Zufahrtsstraße ist bis zum Parkplatz direkt auf dem Gipfel asphaltiert. Die letzten 8 km von der Hauptstraße hier hoch bestehen aus sehr vielen Serpentinen. Zudem ist der Parkplatz auf dem Gipfel nicht sehr groß.
Zur Zeit entsteht unterhalb der Teleskope und des Gipfel des Roque de Los Muchachos ein modernes und großes Besucherzentrum. Mit Fertigstellung des Besucherzentrums wird auch die direkte Fahrt mit dem Auto zu den Teleskopen und zum Gipfel nicht mehr möglich sein. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt werden Shuttlebusse die Besucher zu den Teleskopen und auf den Gipfel bringen.

The Roque de Los Muchachos is with 2.426 meters, the highest mountain on La Palma. It is the northeastern part of the Caldera de Taburiente (visit link).
In clear weather, the view is gigantic. You can see from over 2400 meters directly several hundred meters deep into the Caldera de Taburiente and down to the coast even down to zero meters.
To get to this Waymark you have to use a narrow staircase that goes down to the right just before the first vantage point.
The narrow path that leads to this vantage point is paved with rough stones, but the path is mostly not secured to the abyss.
Children should not walk around here without parents' supervision.
You should also be sure-footed and free from giddiness.
During storm, rain, heavy fog, night, ice or snow, this Waymark is not available and no attempts should be made to visit this Waymark.
Then there is danger to life here.
The access road, which leads to the top of Roque de Los Muchachos, is closed from 9 pm until 7 am (because it leads through the grounds of the Observatory). The access road is completly paved up to the parking lot on the top of Roque de Los Muchachos. The last 8 km from the main road up here is very curvy. In addition, the parking area on the summit is not very big.
Currently, just below the telescopes and the top of Roque de los Muchachos, a modern and large visitor center is being built. Until its completion (probably beginning of 2019) no tours are offered at the moment. It should be noted that if the guided tours in the facility are resumed, the minimum age for participants in guided tours is 12 years. With the completion of the visitor center, the direct journey by car to the telescopes and the summit of the Roque de los Muchachos will no longer be possible. From then on, shuttle buses will take visitors from the visitor center to the telescopes and the top of Roque de los Muchachos.
On the summit of Roque de los Muchachos it can be very uncomfortable in rain, storm and fog. In winter, snow is possible here, even if it is still warm on the coast.
