Die beiden Teleskope sind dem deutschen Astrophysiker Florian Göbel (1972 – 2008) (visit link) gewidmet. Florian Göbel war maßgeblich an der Entwicklung, Planung und dem Bau der MAGIC Telescopes beteiligt und genoss trotz seinem jungen Alters weltweite Anerkennung. Am 10. September 2008 kam er bei einem tragischen Unfall auf La Palma nur 9 Tage vor der Einweihung der Teleskope ums Leben. Während Arbeiten an der Kamera des 2. Teleskopes stürzte er 10 Meter in die Tiefe und verletzte sich tödlich. Die Einweihungsfeier wurde daraufhin abgesagt. Seitdem treffen sich jedes Jahr Verwandte, Freunde und Kollegen am 10. September an den Teleskopen um an ihn zu erinnern.
MAGIC steht für Major Atmospheric Gammaray Imagin Cherenkov. Die Anlage besteht aus zwei Teleskopen mit einem Durchmesser von 17 Meter mit je 246 Spiegeln mit einer Fläche von jeweils 1 qm. Inbetriebnahme der Teleskope war 2003 und 2008.
Die Teleskope messen die Gammastrahlung, die Teil des hochenergetischen Lichtes ist. Im Gegensatz zu sichtbarem Licht enthält die Gammastrahlung unter Umständen mehr als 1.000.000 mal mehr Energie. Damit ist es möglich noch Objekte nachzuweisen, die auch weit außerhalb unserer Galaxie liegen. Zusammen mit den Messdaten anderer, ähnlicher Stationen und Messungen von Satelliten können so auch Objekte, die weit außerhalb unserer Galaxie liegen nachgewiesen werden.
Die Anlage liegt auf der Westseite des Roque de Los Muchachos auf einer Höhe von ca. 2300 m Höhe. Die Zufahrtsstraße, die auch auf den Gipfel führt, ist jeweils in der Zeit vom 21 Uhr bis 7 Uhr gesperrt. Die Zufahrtsstraße ist bis zum Parkplatz direkt auf dem Gipfel asphaltiert. Die letzten 8 km von der Hauptstraße hier hoch bestehen aus sehr vielen Serpentinen. Zudem ist der Parkplatz auf dem Gipfel nicht sehr groß.
An den Teleskopen selbst gibt es keine ausgewiesenen Parkplätze. Viele Besucher nutzen einen der 3 Hubschrauberlandeplätze, die direkt neben den Teleskopen liegen, als Parkplatz oder parken direkt an der Straße. Man kann zu Fuss bis auf wenige Meter an die Teleskope herangehen. Dort sind auch entsprechende Hinweistafeln mit Erklärungen aufgestellt.
Zur Zeit entsteht unterhalb der Teleskope und des Gipfel des Roque de Los Muchachos ein modernes und großes Besucherzentrum. Bis zu dessen Fertigstellung (voraussichtlich Anfang 2019) werden zur Zeit keine Führungen angeboten. Zu beachten ist, dass, wenn die Führungen in der Teleskop-Anlage wieder aufgenommen werden, das Mindestalter für die Besucher 12 Jahre beträgt. Mit Fertigstellung des Besucherzentrums wird auch die direkte Fahrt mit dem Auto zu den Teleskopen und zum Gipfel nicht mehr möglich sein. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt werden Shuttlebusse die Besucher zu den Teleskopen und dem Gipfel bringen.
Hier oben kann es bei Regen, Sturm und Nebel sehr ungemütlich werden. Im Winter ist sogar Schnee möglich, selbst wenn es an der Küste noch recht warm ist. The telescopes are dedicated to the German astrophysicist Florian Göbel (1972 - 2008) (visit link).
Florian Göbel was instrumental in the development, planning and construction of MAGIC Telescopes. He enjoyed worldwide recognition as an astrophysicist despite his young age. On 10 September 2008, he was killed in a tragic accident on La Palma only 9 days before the inauguration of the telescopes. While working on the camera of the second telescope he fell 10 meters in depth and was deadly injured. The inauguration ceremony was then canceled. Every year since then, relatives, friends and colleagues meet at the telescopes on September 10th to remember him.

The facility is located on the west side of the top of the Roque de Los Muchachos at an altitude of about 2300 m above sea level. The access road, which also leads to the top of Roque de Los Muchachos, is closed from 9 pm until 7 am.
The access road is completly paved up to the parking lot on the top of Roque de Los Muchachos.
The last 8 km from the main road up here is very curvy. In addition, the parking area on the summit is not very big.
There are no designated parking spaces at the telescopes themselves.
Many visitors use one of the 3 helicopter landing pads, which are right next to the telescopes, as a parking lot or park directly on the street. You can approach the telescopes on foot up to a few meters. There are also appropriate billboards with explanations.
Currently, just below the telescopes and the top of Roque de los Muchachos, a modern and large visitor center is being built. Until its completion (probably beginning of 2019) no tours are offered at the moment. It should be noted that if the guided tours in the facility are resumed, the minimum age for participants in guided tours is 12 years. With the completion of the visitor center, the direct journey by car to the telescopes and the summit of the Roque de los Muchachos will no longer be possible. From then on, shuttle buses will take visitors from the visitor center to the telescopes and the top of Roque de los Muchachos.
On the summit of Roque de los Muchachos it can be very uncomfortable in rain, storm and fog. In winter, snow is possible here, even if it is still warm on the coast.
