This pillar is situated 160 metres above sea level on a ridge extending westwards from the Hill of Finavon north-west of the town of Forfar. It lies on the high point of a field above the farm at Carse Bank and is in good condition with good views mainly to the north and south-west.
STEEPNESS: Steepest from the northern direction, gentler slope to the south.
TERRAIN: Mostly on indistinct tracks, but grassy pastureland in the final few hundred yards.
ACCESSIBILITY: Difficult to reach due to being situated on farmland. Three routes are possible, via Carse Bank to the south, less than a mile. From the A90 to the north from Parkford, slightly nearer, but steeper and with an indistinct path up the hillside. Or along the top of the Hill of Finavon from the east from the narrow minor road that runs over its eastern side around two miles away.
NAVIGATION: Pillar is visible within the field once up on the high ground, but is difficult to locate in mist.
DANGER: Electric fences are in abundance in the area and any gate that can be opened or climbed should be used. Livestock, mainly cattle, are also to be avoided. Any route other than from the south requires a tramp through a section of overgrown terrain a few hundred yards north-east of the field the pillar is situated in.
