The collier was an important part of the iron making process. His job was to make the charcoal which in turn fired the furnace which made the iron. A collier would usually spend his winter cutting firewood and then from May thru October, the collier's job was to tend the fire which burned the wood that he had cut into charcoal. The collier would live in these earth huts right next to the charcoal hearth and tend the fire 24 hours a day. The process of turning wood into charcoal took about ten to fourteen days.
