Whilst walking in Old City Philadelphia, just south of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, I discovered this benchmark, dirty, and off to the side of the sidewalk. Adjacent to the metal disc is a patina-worn, rectangular marker, erected in 1940 and commemorating the site of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. The marker makes the benchmark an easy find.
The marker was placed by the National Park Service, and under the immediate supervision of the Department of the Interior. The center of the disc reads, "INDE 40". INDE being the abbreviation for Independence. Curiously, this benchmark is not listed on the Geocaching site nor can the disc be found on the National Geodetic Survey Data Explorer site.
