A memorial to three Highway Patrolmen stands in Boland Park, at the location where 2Lt Grimes was killed. His memorial is a polished black granite monument which reads:

James Pat Grimes
#88

2Lt James Pat Grimes, Trooper Houston "Pappy" Summers,
and Trooper Billy Young were shot and killed
while attempting to apprehend two McAlester
Penetentiary escapees who were wanted for several
murders since their escape. Trooper Summers and
Trooper Young were shot and killed, while on a roving
patrol, on a county road when they came across the
escapees in a recently stolen truck. Both troopers were
killed in the ensuing gun battle

2Lt Grimes and 2Lt Hoyt Hughes located the two
McAlester Penetentiary escapees involved in an earlier
gun fight with Troopers Young and Summers near
Kenefic when the escapees drove their stolen pickup
into a Caddo residence's yard. Trooper Hoyt
Basinger, pilot of an OHP aircraft, and Trooper
David Blackburn, his observer, had spotted the stolen
vehicle and guided OHP units until the convicts
stopped their vehicle. 2Lt Grimes was killed in the
resulting gun fight and 2Lt Hoyt Hughes was
seriously injured before the two escapees were
themselves shotand killed by troopers. 2Lt Grimes had
been with the Agency for 12 years.
