William W. Essick, who was the founder of the Pennsylvania Optical Company, believed in giving back to his community, a trait inspired by his service during WWI in Yugoslavia and Belgium. His two main passions were fighting tuberculosis and working towards prison reform.

The plaque reads: "These acres were donated by William W Essick iin memroy of his wife Susan Mary (Rhein) Essick. to be used for the nursing back to health of those who are ill, and the readajustment of thos who may sin against society."
