Text of the plaque: Panzer V Panther After invading the Soviet Union in June 1941, German forces suffered heavy losses from Soviet tanks such as the T-34. The Germans responded by developing the tough Panzer V Panther, and built nearly 6,000 from 1943 to 1945. The Panther's powerful accurate gun could destroy Sherman tanks used by Allied forces from well over a kilometre away. In contrast, Canadian soldiers usually had to battle Panthers at much closer ranges so their weapons could penetrate its armour. See also: ( visit link) Panzer V Panther: ( visit link)
