Per his obituary (visit link) Dr. Richard Whittaker was a Pottstown Orthopedic doctor who passed in 2016.

According to this article, (visit link) Dr. Whittaker was an avid bicyclist and often road the trail that the bench now sits on. For his 50th wedding anniversary, he and his wife organized a riding excursion on the Schuylkill River Trail and got 50 people to ride with them. For his 70th birthday, the got 70 people to ride with them. Now, the bench honors his memory.
