The bronze statue placed on Place Saint Sauveur in Caen depicts Louis XIV (1638 – 1715), the King of France and of Navarre. It is a work of French sculptor Louis Petitot (1794 — 1862). The statue was inaugurated on April 24, 1828 on Place de la Republique (then named Place Royale). The statue was placed on the place where another statue of the King Louis XIV was placed here until the French Revolution when it was destroyed in 1791. The statue was during centuries moved a few times to different places in Caen and in the current place it was installed after the World War II. Louis XIV is depicted here as a Roman Emperor with a laurel on his head. The height of the state is 3.65 meters and it is placed on a marble pedestal
Biography
Louis XIV (5 September 1638 – 1 September 1715), known as Louis the Great ("Louis le Grand") or the Sun King ("le Roi-Soleil"), was King of France and of Navarre. His reign, from 1643 to his death in 1715, began at the age of four and lasted seventy-two years, three months, and eighteen days. As such, it is one of the longest documented reigns of any European monarch.
