Rathmines became a strong base early in World War Two for the Catalina Flying Boats (Seaplanes). The eye-catching memorial is at the end of a pebblecrete path, that proceeds past several brick walls, with dozens of plaques for the specific Squadrons that trained and flew out of here.

The brick-block looks somewhat like an 'upstanding' bomb, with four brick fins at the base of the square pillar that stands about 5 metres high. The three-bladed Catalina propeller is fixed to the top. About 2 metres up the pillar is a grey stone tablet, with the following gilded inscription:

Dedicated to Those Who Served
at the R.A.A.F. Rathmines
and to all associated
with Flying Boats and Seaplanes
1939 - 1960
----
Unveiled by
Air Vice Marshall W.E. Townsend G.B., C.B.E.
16th Sept. 1972.
