The sign says:

Werbhaus

Werbhaus

Already in the 14th century a caupo (innkeeper) in Montabaur is mentioned. Montabaur
was a city for supra-regional markets, had to provide shelter for foreign traders.
must be given.
The first inn known by name, however, is the Gasthof zum St. Geist in the
Ahlen between the Great Market and Judengasse (1476).
In the 18th century the recruiters stayed here. This is why the name Werbhaus stands for the inn as the Holy Spirit. The young farmers of the Westerwald stopped by on the market days when they had sold their products. They were made drunk, hidden in the deep cellars under the house and, if enough boys had got together, taken away as bound men on nocturnal transport, brought across the border and sold to foreign powers. The name Werbhaus was given to the whole alley in 1899 by the city council.
