Text of the plaque:

Junkers W.34 f/fi

During the First World War, Dr. Hugo Junkers, a German engineer designed a series of aircraft unique in having both an all metal skeleton and a metal skin. In 1919 the Junkers F.13, the world's first all metal civil transport, flew for the first time. From this aircraft stemmed in 1926, the W.33 and W.34, both with larger fuselages and both retaining the all-metal construction still unusual at that time –– a feature that particularly suited them to the weather conditions and rough landings of bush flying in the Canadian North. The fuselage and the low mounted multi-spar wing were covered with corrugated aluminum sheet: the W.33 was equipped with a liquid cooled engine, the W.34 with an air-cooled radial engine.

It was a Junkers W.33, the Bremen, that won world renown in 1928 for accomplishing the first east-west trans-Atlantic flight. Driven off course, the Bremen landed on Greenly Island near the Quebec-Labrador border where its crew was flown out by two Canadian Fairchild FC-2Ws. This feat ensured the Junkers considerable commercial success worldwide.

Canadian Airways Ltd of Winnipeg, Manitoba, the major operator of the aircraft in Canada, considered the W.34 to be the best bush plane of the period in durability, performance and handling. Though because of stiff duty charges only nine w.33/34's were imported, many of Canada's outstanding bush pilots flew these machines.

The aircraft on display, registered with Canadian Airways in 1932 was first used in Chibougameau region of northern Quebec for mineral exploration work. In the summer of 1939 it was transferred to the Lac du Bonnet area of Manitoba and achieved a durability record for a Junkers by remaining in continuous use for 30 years. In 1962 it was purchased and donated to the Museum by Mrs J.A. Richardson, widow of James Richardson, the founder of Canadian Airways, and was flown all the way from British-Columbia to Rockliffe, putting down on the Ottawa River. The occasion marked the last flight of any of the Junkers F.13/W.33/W.44 family and the end of the active life of an early Canadian bush plane.
