On Highway 81 on the north edge of Comanche, Centennial Plaza commemorates the 100th anniversary of Oklahoma statehood, plus several other area of local history. This marble plaque speaks of the Chisholm Trail which ran through this area in the late 1800's. It reads:
The Chisholm Trail On April 1, 1866, a herd of 1,800 longhorn cattle left Cuero, Texas on a 728 mile trek to the rail heads in Kansas. Their route had been laid out by Jesse Chisholm the previous year. It crossed the railroad at Doan's store and followed a route along the U.S. Highway 81 corridor. Over 4,000,000 head of cattle moved over the Chisholm Trail.
