Herkunft: schmaler Streifen an der Pazifikküste von Nordkalifornien über die Grenze zu Oregon.
Maße: Höhe bis über 102 m, Stammdurchmesser bis 7 m. „Hyperion" ist mit 115,5 m der höchste Baum der Erde.
Benadelung: Kurztriebe flach, ähnlich der Eibe, Wachsstreifen auf der Blatt-unterseite jedoch viel heller. Nadeln an den Langtrieben im Wipfelbereich kompakter, spiralige Anordnung.
Zapfen: bis 3 cm lang. Samenreife nach einem Jahr. Reife Zapfen färben sich gelblich grün, sie verbleiben am Baum und streuen die Samen aus.
Der Baum treibt nach Schaden oder Fällung oft wileder aus.
Die ersten Samen gelangten um 1840 nach Europa. In Deutschland hat aufgrund der mäßigen Frosthärte nur eine Handvoll Bäume aus dem 19. Jahrhundert 1 überlebt.
