"The Church of Our Lady was built in the second half of the 12th century (about 1160), on the basis of an older and smaller sanctuary, of which there are some traces in the fore-choir.

The Saint-Eutrope church of Saintes (consecrated in 1096) served as a model for the builders of Rioux. It underwent numerous and important modifications during the following centuries, notably in the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries.

The nave, the western portal and the apse date from the beginning and the second half of the twelfth century. The lateral chapel south and its portal of the second half of the twelfth century.

Originally the church had a bell tower above the fourth bay of the nave. Strong columns paired with pilasters attest to this first destination.

The north side chapels, the former seigneurial chapels and the north exterior door date from the late fifteenth century, early sixteenth century. They were built by the Baron de Rioux.

The gable of the western façade was pierced with a round opening and surmounted by a square bell-tower with faces decorated twin windows trefled in the fifteenth century. The bell of 1583 was replaced in 1867 by a founded by master Amédée Bollée, who weighs 611 kg.

The nave is vaulted in low cradle in 1860."
