"The Ateneum building was designed by Theodor Höijer and completed in 1887.

The facade of Ateneum is decorated with statues and reliefs which contain a lot of symbols. In the third floor, four caryatids support the pediment. These symbolize the four classical art forms: sculpture, painting, geometry, and sculpture.

These statues were by Carl Eneas Sjöstrand."

"A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides literally means "maidens of Karyai", an ancient town of Peloponnese. Karyai had a famous temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis in her aspect of Artemis Karyatis: "As Karyatis she rejoiced in the dances of the nut-tree village of Karyai, those Karyatides, who in their ecstatic round-dance carried on their heads baskets of live reeds, as if they were dancing plants"."

"Carl Eneas Sjöstrand (11 September 1828 – 14 February 1906) was a Swedish sculptor who worked over 40 years in Grand Duchy of Finland.

He was born in Stockholm, the son of painter Carl Johan Sjöstrand, and studied under Herman Wilhelm Bissen in Copenhagen. Although Swedish, Sjöstrand is considered the founder of Finnish sculpture because of his role as a promoter of Finnish public sculpture in the 1850s and 60s, and his interpretations of Finnish themes. Among his students was the Finnish sculptor Walter Runeberg. He lived in Finland from 1863 till 1904. He is buried in the Hietaniemi Cemetery in Helsinki.

Sjöstrand was the father of Gerda Sjöstrand, who married the Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni and of the painter Helmi Sjöstrand."

Esimerkiksi Helsingin Ateneumin fasadia koristavat muusia kuvaavat karyatidit.

Veistostyyppi on saanut nimensä juuri Erekhtheionissa olevista pylväistä. Antiikin aikana niitä kutsuttiin yksinkertaisesti nimellä korai, ”neidot”. Nimitys ”karyatidi” sai alkunsa, kun Vitruvius yhdisti Erekhtheionin neidot virheellisesti Lakonian Karyain naisiin. Tätä kautta kaikkia vastaavankaltaisia pylväitä kutsutaan edelleen samalla nimellä."

"Carl Eneas Sjöstrand (11. syyskuuta 1828 Tukholma, Ruotsi – 14. helmikuuta 1906 Tukholma) oli ruotsalaissyntyinen kuvanveistäjä, joka saapui Suomeen Fredrik Cygnaeuksen kutsusta tehtävänään suunnitella Turkuun Henrik Gabriel Porthanin patsas. Hän toimi sitten yli 40 vuotta kuvanveiston opettajana Suomessa, ja häntä on kutsuttu suomalaisen kuvanveiston isäksi."
