On August 21, 1804 the Corps of Discovery passed by what is now Sioux City. Nearby is the grave of Sergeant Floyd, who died the day before. He was the only expedition member who died during the expedition. It is believed that appendicitis killed him.
The Sergeant Floyd Riverboat Museum, in Sioux City, Iowa, has a wonderful display and lots of information about the Lewis and Clark expedition. The museum is located inside the Motor Vessel “Sgt Floyd”. During this vessel’s operating period, it traveled the Missouri River section of the Lewis and Clark expedition as a survey and inspection vessel for the Army Corps of Engineers.
