The confluence of these two rivers may appear inconsequential considering one is very small and the other fairly large.

On the surface, one may presume this is just one small stream emptying into a larger body of water. Yet when the whole picture is examined, Little River is a major player in the history of the area in as it relates to the "Pee Dee Tribe, a South Appalachian Mississippian culture people that developed in the region as early as 980 CE. They thrived in the Pee Dee River region of North and South Carolina during the Pre-Columbian era." [1]

A slow meandering river most of the time, the Little River provided access to the Great Pee Dee for travel and trade with area settlements. It can be likened to a feeder highway to a major interstate highway. Travel to settlements from their home territory in dugout canoes provided needed materials for food, clothing, and other artifacts for everyday life.

The Great Pee Dee River flows by Little River giving access to a great world beyond. There are settlements of Native Americans all along the river. There is much archeological significance in the travel of the local tribes to distant destinations.
