Text of the plaque:
The 5.5 inch medium gun was developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment in the late 1930's to meet a requirement for a five inch gun to fire a projectile weighing 40.824 kg (90 lb) to a maximum range of 14,630 M (47,998 ft). The gun entered production in 1941 and was first used in action in the Middle-East the following year. It served primarily with front line units of the British Army until 1978 and was phased out of service in 1980.
