Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (9 March 1934 – 27 March 1968) was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human in space.
On 12 April 1961, the Vostok 3KA-3 (Vostok 1) spacecraft with Gagarin aboard was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome. Gagarin thus became both the first human to travel into space, and the first to orbit the Earth.
The bust shows the head of Gagarin. It is put up on the roof of a private home at Beethovenallee 68. The approximately one meter high bust is made of aluminium and is hollow.
Together with other busts of the heroes of the Soviet Union, the statue was stored in the park of the then Embassy of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s and was to be disposed of. The owner of the house knew the ambassador and could get the statue. He had it placed on the roof of his house in Beethovenallee 68. The transport took place with a Fiat 500.
The bust can be seen from the street.
