The first written mention of Lipník dates from the year 1238, the town itself is certainly much older. Since 1989, Lipník is an urban conservation area (there are only two conservation areas within the Olomouc Region - Olomouc and Lipník). There are more than 100 listed buildings. The town has retained its original street lines, historic buildings in the medieval core and to a large extent very remarkable fortification system, which still bears all the signs of ancient settlements – a dominant square in the centre, „star-type“ road system and bypass roads. To a large extent, it has preserved the original historic town´s layout.

Pozdne renesancní zvonice stojí jen kousek od kostela sv. Jakuba Vetšího. Duvod pro postavení zvonice byl ten, že na pocátku 17. století porídilo mesto do kostelní veže nový, velký zvon Michal, který vážil pres pet tun. Pri zvonení rozechvíval kostelní vež natolik, že byla obava, aby se nezrítila. Zvonice byla postavena v roce 1609 za pouhých 222 dní. Hranolová stavba o pudorysu 10x10 m a výšce 24 m dokonce prežila bez úhony velký požár mesta v roce 1613. Stenu zdobí slunecní hodiny a znak mesta.

Ve zvonici se nachází tri zvony, již zmínený Michal, který je jedním z nejvetších zvonu na Morave. Dále pak o více jak sto let starší Jakub (1.500 kg), který sem byl rovnež prenesen z kostela sv. Jakuba, pochází z roku 1464. Tím tretím je pak daleko menší zvon Barborka (220 kg), jenž sloužil vetšinou jako umírácek.
