The history of the Monastery begins in 1187, when the king Alfonso VIII and his wife Leonor, anxious to turn this place into Kings' Pantheon and worthy retirement of great number of women belonging to the highest aristocracy and the royalty, obtained, thanks to the support of the Pope Clemente III and of the Abbot of Citeaux, Guido, to take forward a new foundation in Burgos, giving place to the birth of the Monastery of Santa Maria the Royal "Monasterio de las Huelgas"
