Nowadays people merrely play golf here, but what most of them dont know...
On an old map from 1912 you can see that there are two lakes. The Small and the Big Reed Hole. The Little Reed Hole was a shallow swamp that was filled with soil by the owner. The Big Reed Hole was an immense deep well where the water never gotfrozen. Year after year the owner dumped pruning wood and tree stumps in this lake. From 1934 Alphens garbage was deposited in the Big Reed Hole. It disappeared without a trace in the depth, the hole never seemed to be full. In 1970 however, the hole was finally full, and thesite was closed. The municipality opened another dumping location, but that was full after just two years. So on May 25, 1972, the area was again, but now completely, designated as a waste dumping site..
Not only for household refuse, but also to solve landfill problems for heavily polluted commercial waste.
Until 1978 all dirt from Alphen was deposited on the Coupépolder. Large quantities of South-Holland industrial waste were also deposited. According to a statement from a bulldozer operator, barrels ("minimum 10,000 in 6 months") were stacked with officially "dangerous" content as early as 1974. The haphazard dumping was too dangerous, that only happened with "harmless" barrels.
From 1 January 1978 it was no longer allowed to dispose of combustible waste. The much filthy industrial waste deposits continued until 1 January 1985. On that it was finally closed.
