"The long distance between Kansas City and Japan became a little closer today.

Japan's Ambassador to the United States, Ichiro Fujisaki , made his first-ever visit to Kansas City Wednesday afternoon.

It was to celebrate the 40-year relationship between Kansas City and its Sister City -- Kurashiki, Japan.
Ambassador Fujisaki attended a cherry blossom tree planting in Loose Park.

He says these cherry blossoms are very important.

"To all Americans; not only to Washington, (but) to elsewhere,” Fujisaki said. “And this is why 36 cities were picked to plant cherry blossom trees."

Ambassador Fujisaki also got a VIP tour of the city.

Text of the plaque:

These Japanese Flowering Cherry Trees were planted to Commemorate and Celebrate the first 25 years of Sister City Relations between the Citizens of Kubashiki, Okayama Prefecture, Japan and Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.A.
