La Chapelle de Saint-Germain de Secqueval se situe tout en haut d’une colline dépendant du Hameau La Plagne de Guerville. Tout en haut, et par temps dégagé, vous pouvez voir la Collégiale Notre-Dame de Mantes-la-Jolie, une vue sur Mantes, la vallée des castors (autre Hameau de Guerville) avec dans le fond Mantes-la-Ville et Limay.
Cette Chapelle date de la moitié du XIe et début XIIe siècle et est de style roman.
Elle a été restaurée au XIXe siècle. Une travée à l’ouest est supprimée et la chapelle est désaffectée.
Il s’agirait du seul vestige restant d’un prieuré de prémontrés dépendant de l’Abbaye d’ Abbecourt.

Cette chapelle est assez petite 7M sur 5m environ, est de plan longitudinale et est construite en moellon. La porte de la chapelle est voûtée en plein cintre et surmontée d’une baie également arquée en plein cintre.
A l’origine, à l’intérieur quelques beaux chapiteaux, un groupe sculpté représentant le baptême du Christ la composaient.
D’après la légende, suite au vœu fait par Henri de Guerville, seigneur du lieu, au retour de la 8ème croisade en 1162. Voici ce que raconte le Seigneur Henri de Guerville : "Sachent tous présents et à venir qui verront ces lettres que moi, Henri de Guerville, seigneur du même lieu, étant captif en la ville de Nègrepont, les Sarrazins me lièrent et me garrotèrent, puis m’enfermèrent dans un grand coffre avec le curé de Guerville. Alors, je fis vœu et promis à Dieu, à la bienheureuse Vierge Marie et au bienheureux Saint-Germain, que si jamais je pouvais revenir en France, et surtout dans les terres de mon domaine situé dans la paroisse de Guerville, je fonderais et bâtirais une église en leur honneur.
Et pourtant qu’avoir fait ce vœu, en l’espace d’un seul jour, moi et le dit curé de Guerville, nous nous sommes trouvés transportés par l’aide de Dieu, de la bienheureuse Vierge Marie et de Saint-Germain, sur une petite colline ; je l’ai consacrée à Dieu, à la bienheureuse Vierge Marie et à Saint-Germain, et je lui ai donné le nom de Saint-Germain de Secqueval. J’ai donné ensuite à cette église deux cents arpents de terre situés dans mon domaine et dans la paroisse de Guerville, avec les dîmes, grosses et menues, de ces deux cents arpents de terre".

La chapelle fut bien fondée par le Seigneur Henri de Guerville. Il donna la chapelle, les terres et dîmes à l’abbaye Notre-Dame de Clairefontaine qui les posséda jusqu’à la Révolution. Cette fondation fut confirmée par une charte de Philippe-Auguste de 1186 qui existe aux Archives.

La messe y était célébrée tous les dimanches jusqu’à la Révolution puis une fois par an le jour de la Saint-Germain jusqu’en 1947.

Malheureusement, je n’ai rien trouvé d’autre sur l’histoire de cette chapelle, pourquoi elle est en ruine maintenant.
Lorsque nous l’avons découverte en juillet 2016, elle était encore moins mise en valeur qu’elle ne l’est actuellement. En effet, fin 2016, début 2017 quelques travaux de rénovation ont été effectués. Et depuis ces travaux, nous pouvons de nouveau pénétré dans les restes de la Chapelle et observés les vestiges de celle-ci.

The chapel of Saint-Germain de Secqueval is located at the top of a hill belonging to the hamlet La Plagne de Guerville. At the top, and on a clear day, you can see the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame of Mantes-la-Jolie, a view of Mantes, the valley of Beavers (other Hameau de Guerville) with in the background Mantes-la-Ville and Limay .
This chapel dates from the mid-eleventh and early twelfth century and is of Romanesque style.
It was restored in the 19th century. A span to the west is removed and the chapel is decommissioned.
It would be the only remaining vestige of a Priory of Premonstratens attached to Abbey of Abbecourt.

This chapel is quite small 7M about 5m, is longitudinal and is built of rubble. The door of the chapel is vaulted semicircular and surmounted by a bay also arched semicircular.
Originally, inside some beautiful capitals, a carved group representing the baptism of Christ composed it.
According to legend, following the vow made by Henry de Guerville, lord of the place, the return of the 8th crusade in 1162. I then gave to this church two hundred acres of land in my domain and in the parish of Guerville, with the tithes, large and small, of these two hundred acres of land.

The chapel was well founded by the Lord Henri de Guerville. He gave the chapel, lands and tithes to the Abbey of Our Lady of Clairefontaine who owned them until the Revolution. This foundation was confirmed by a charter of Philip Augustus of 1186 which exists in the Archives.

Mass was celebrated every Sunday until the Revolution and once a year on St. Germain's Day until 1947.

Unfortunately, I did not find anything else about the history of this chapel, why it is in ruins now.
When we discovered it in July 2016, it was even less developed than it is now. In fact, at the end of 2016, beginning of 2017, some renovation work was done. And since these works, we can once again entered the remains of the Chapel and observed the remains of it.
