The cloth industry reached its main development in Ypres around 1260, which explains the start of building, around 1250, the complex of the Cloth Hall with belfry. The successive construction campaigns that presumably follow an overall plan originally established stretch from the middle of the 13th century to the 17th century.
The belfry, 70 meters high, integrates with its base in the elevation of the main facade of the hall 120 meters long.
In the center, the grand portal of the belfry opens on the vaulted passage which crosses the complex. Upstairs, the statue of the Virgin is surrounded on both sides of niches, some of which house the statues of the Counts of Flanders. The three following levels stand out from the roofs of the halls and are pierced with ogival windows of varying dimensions according to the levels.
The upper floor which bears the clock since 1378 is confined to corner turrets and is cushioned by the battlements that line the walkway; it houses a carillon from 1607, carillon composed today of 49 bells. The polygonal slate roof is surmounted by a lantern, a cornice trimmed with eight eagles and a small pavilion crowned with a golden dragon.

L'industrie drapière atteint son essor principal à Ypres vers 1260, ce qui explique la mise en chantier, vers 1250, du complexe de la halle aux draps avec beffroi. Les campagnes de construction successives qui suivent vraisemblablement un plan d'ensemble établi à l'origine s'étalent du milieu du XIIIème siècle au XVIIème siècle.
Le beffroi, de 70 mètres de haut, s'intègre à sa base dans l'élévation de la façade principale de la halle longue de 120 mètres.
Au centre, le grand portail du beffroi s'ouvre sur le passage voûté qui traverse le complexe. A l'étage, la statue de la Vierge est entourée de part et d'autres de niches dont certaines abritent les statues des comtes de Flandre. Les trois niveaux suivants se détachent des toitures des halles et sont percés de fenêtres ogivales de dimensions variables selon les niveaux.
L'étage supérieur qui porte l'horloge depuis 1378 est cantonné de tourelles d'angle et est amorti par les créneaux qui bordent le chemin de ronde ; il abrite un carillon à partir de 1607, carillon composé aujourd'hui de 49 cloches. La toiture polygonale d'ardoise est sommée d'un lanternon, d'une corniche garnie de huit aigles et d'un petit pavillon couronné d'un dragon doré.

De bovenste verdieping die de klok draagt sinds 1378 is beperkt tot hoektorentjes en wordt opgevangen door de kantelen die de loopbrug omlijnen; het herbergt een beiaard uit 1607, beiaard bestaande uit 49 klokken. Het veelhoekige dak in leisteen wordt bekroond door een lantaarn, een kroonlijst afgezet met acht adelaars en een paviljoen gekroond met een gouden draak.
