Text of the plaque
This building is not only a part of the history of Ottawa, but also a witness to the contemporary history of China-Canada relations.
In 1866, Mother Marie of the Order of our Lady of Charity came from Montreal to Ottawa to carry out mission work in a small wooden building on this site.
From 1875 to 1877, Mother Marie oversaw construction of a spacious building here, which was named the Monastère de Notre-Dame de Charité du Refuge d'Ottawa.
In 1895, the building was expanded to create its current H-shaped architectural form.
Although severely damaged in a fire on July 22, 1938, the monastery was rebuilt in 1941.
At this time, it was called the Monastère de Notre-Dame de Charité du Bon-Pasteur d'Angers.
In 1972, the Chinese government purchased this building as the chancery of the Chinese Embassy.
