Devil's Canyon presents a significant barrier to traffic moving from the copper mines of Globe and Miami Arizona to the milling and shipping facilities of Superior and on to Phoenix. Built in 1926, the Claypool Tunnel made it possible for traffic to move through the canyon. The highway was two lanes wide but at only 17 feet wide, the tunnel restricted traffic significantly. It was replaced in 1952 with a four lane tunnel slightly higher up the mountainside. The tunnel still provides passage for hikers and bikers who want to avoid the new tunnel which has no shoulders.
