First Presbyterian Church traced its roots to 1827, when services were first conducted. At that time a section of land was set aside for burials, and for construction of a wooden-frame church. The church was replaced in 1854 by a brick church.

The cemetery remained in use until 1873, when it reached its capacity. Burials from then on were carried out in the larger Port Hope cemeteries, such as Union Cemetery.

The cemetery fell into disuse, and was abandoned following the demolition of the old church. In 1980, local citizens groups initiated restoration actions of the old cemetery. Stones that had been scattered, broken and buried were recovered and placed in the current display pattern. At this time the memorial stone was placed.

It reads:

THE PORT HOPE PIONEER PRESBYTERIAN CEMETERY
1827 - 1873

Dedicated to the memory of over 60 members
of First Presbyterian Church buried here
A small frame church completed in 1831 on
the hill above facing Baldwin Street was
replaced by a larger brick church in 1854.
These early settlers contributed much to
the development of the community by their
ideals of industry, piety and charity.

The Memorial was dedicated 24 October, 1987.
