SS #13 in North Buxton was built in 1861. For many students, it was the first school they had ever attended, as this community, formerly called the Elgin Settlement, was the last stop for many who had followed the Underground Railroad to flee slavery in the US an seek freedom in Canada.

The schoolhouse remained open over 107 years, only closing in 1968 following reorganization and consolidation of school districts.

Today, it is part of the Buxton National Historic Site of Canada. Their website may be accessed here: (visit link)
