A topography map lists this marker along with another nearby marker to the south. The marker is comprised of a marble plaque embedded in a concrete base which reads:

Dedicated in 1862 in
Honor of Daniel Smith.
Pioneer of 1852, Donor
of the Townsite.

          D.A.R. 1933

A conflicting inventory datasheet from 1976 by the Oregon State Preservation Office mentions this marker as having been destroyed by a decades-long family feud but here it is, still standing inconspicuously off Territorial Hwy. Below is an older topography map from the early 1900s that listed this community as being jointly named Franklin-Smithfield. It would be nice to know why the name 'Smithfield' was eliminated in favor of Franklin?
