La première Société d’Émulation fut créée à Liège à la fin du XVIIIe siècle par le prince-évêque Velbrück à son emplacement actuel. Endommagé après le passage de généraux alliés en 1814, le siège de la Société fut restauré par les architectes Duckers et Delsaux, avant d’être complètement anéanti par les troupes allemandes dans la nuit du 20 au 21 août 1914.
Le bâtiment actuel a été reconstruit après 1920 par l’architecte J. Koenig et terminé en 1934 dans un style éclectique à dominante néoclassique. Le rez-de-chaussée entièrement de calcaire appareillé à refends, est percé de grandes portes cintrées et précédé, au niveau des trois travées centrales, par un portique ouvert d’arcades. Les étages présentent trois travées centrales en ressaut couronnées par un fronton triangulaire sculpté d’une figure féminine entourée d’angelots. Entre les deuxième et troisième étage, deux cartouches portent la devise de la Société « UTILE / DULCI ». Les travées latérales, plus basses, sont éclairées par des baies rectangulaires. Le décor est animé d’une alternance de frontons courbes et triangulaires, d’allèges finement sculptées ou encore de garde-corps en fer forgé. Une toiture mansardée à croupes coiffe la bâtisse. L’intérieur a conservé une belle salle de spectacle à l'italienne. L’ensemble a été entièrement restauré et accueille dans ses locaux historiques et dans l’aile contemporaine qui leur est accolée le Théâtre de la Place, devenu le Théâtre de Liège.
De eerste Emulatievereniging werd op het einde van de 18de eeuw in Luik opgericht door prins-bisschop Velbrück op de huidige locatie. Beschadigd na de passage van de geallieerde generaals in 1814, werd het hoofdkwartier van het Genootschap gerestaureerd door de architecten Duckers en Delsaux, voordat het volledig vernietigd werd door de Duitse troepen in de nacht van 20 op 21 augustus 1914.
Het huidige gebouw werd na 1920 herbouwd door architect J. Koenig en in 1934 afgewerkt in een eclectische neoklassieke stijl. De begane grond, volledig van kalksteen met platen, wordt doorboord door grote boogdeuren en voorafgegaan, op het niveau van de drie centrale baaitjes, door een open portiek van arcades. De vloeren hebben drie centrale overspanningen in uitstekende bekroond met een driehoekig fronton gebeeldhouwd met een vrouwelijke figuur omringd door cherubs. Tussen de tweede en derde verdieping staat op twee cassettes het bedrijfsmotto "UTILE / DULCI". De onderste zijoverspanningen worden verlicht door rechthoekige traveeën. De decoratie wordt geanimeerd door een afwisseling van gebogen en driehoekige frontons, fijn gesneden aanstekers of smeedijzeren leuningen. Een mansardedak met croups overheerst het gebouw. Het interieur heeft een prachtig auditorium in Italiaanse stijl behouden. Het ensemble is volledig gerestaureerd en herbergt het Théâtre de la Place, nu het Théâtre de Liège, in zijn historische panden en in de eigentijdse vleugel die ernaast ligt.
The first Emulation Society was founded in Liege at the end of the 18th century by Prince-Bishop Velbrück at its present location. Damaged after the passage of Allied generals in 1814, the headquarters of the Society was restored by the architects Duckers and Delsaux, before being completely annihilated by German troops on the night of 20 to 21 August 1914.
The present building was rebuilt after 1920 by the architect J. Koenig and finished in 1934 in an eclectic neoclassical style. The ground floor, entirely of limestone with slabs, is pierced by large arched doors and preceded, at the level of the three central bays, by an open portico of arcades. The floors have three central spans in protruding crowned by a triangular pediment carved with a female figure surrounded by cherubs. Between the second and third floors, two cartridges carry the company motto "UTILE / DULCI". The lower side spans are lit by rectangular bays. The decoration is animated by an alternation of curved and triangular pediments, finely carved lighteners or wrought iron railings. A mansard roof with croups tops the building. The interior has retained a beautiful Italian-style auditorium. The ensemble has been completely restored and houses the Théâtre de la Place, now the Théâtre de Liège, in its historic premises and in the contemporary wing adjacent to them.
