The town of Lapeer broke off from Virgil. It has remained small. It does have an old inn that is on the National Register called the Stage Coach Inn. It is currently a private residence.

"Lapeer was one of the last of all the towns in the county to be organized (May 2, 1845)...He therefore named the town Lapeer, combining the French article “la” with the English word “peer”...Sixteen soldiers of the Revolutionary War settled in Lapeer. All died there but one...Lapeer had a population of about 800 but furnished fifty-two for the United States service during the rebellion, many of whom became distinguished upon the battlefield."
