Der charakteristische Universitätsbau der späten Gründerzeit wurde ab 1894 nach Plänen von Alois Koch errichtet und am 5. Dezember 1896 feierlich eröffnet. 1960 erfolgte die Benennung des Hauptgebäudes nach Gregor Mendel, gleichzeitig wurde das Chemiegebäude (axial in die Mitte des nach rückwärts offenen Hofs des Gregor-Mendel-Hauses positioniert und im Jahr 1978 mit den Flügeltrakten des Gregor-Mendel-Hauses verbunden) in Justus von Liebig-Haus umbenannt.

The characteristic university building of the late Gründerzeit was built from 1894 to plans by Alois Koch and ceremonially opened on 5 December 1896. In 1960, the main building was named after Gregor Mendel, at the same time the chemical building (positioned axially in the middle of the backward open courtyard of the Gregor Mendel House and connected in 1978 with the wing tracts of the Gregor Mendel House) was renamed Justus von Liebig House.
