Wirral Country Park
For over 70 years, from the height of the Victorian era onwards, a busy railway linked Hooton, on the main Chester-to-Birkenhead line, to West Kirby, 12 miles away at Wirral's tip. But in 1962 the line was closed. For a while the track lay derelict. But in 1973, backed by money from the Countryside Commission, and after a great deal of work, the old railway line was opened as Wirral Country Park. It was the first Country Park in Britain.

As well as the line itself there is an area at Thurstaston with a visitor centre and the surrounding area has open access land.

The old railway line ran parallel with the Dee estuary, part of which forms the English / Welsh border.

The orientation table
Standing on a small headland in the area around the visitor centre the board faces the Dee estuary with the Welsh hills in the distance.

The contents of the board is based on a hand drawing done by Judith Railton in 20165 and was sponsored by the The Wirral Society.

As well as showing details of the far view it also has some closer details such as steps down to the beach, and some of the fauna and flora in the country park
