A surprise discovery was made when traveling Hwy 97, I noticed this airway beacon and stopped to take a few photos. This beacon is part of the Beaver Marsh State Airport although it is actually privately owned. The airport is nothing more than a dirt landing strip. The AirNav.com website (link below) has this description of the airstrip:
Dimensions: 4500 x 60 ft. / 1372 x 18 m
25 FT RY WIDTH USBL IN CENTER.
Surface: dirt, in fair condition
RUNWAY IS BECOMING OVERGROWN WITH 2-4 FT PINE TREES.
RUNWAY 18/36 DIRT SFC LOOSE & POWDERY, CREATES CLOUDS OF DUST; LOOSE
2-5" ROCKS ON SFC, ROUGH. NUMEROUS PATCHES OF 1 FT BRUSH ON RUNWAYY.
In other words, you're taking your chances if you try to land here with a small private plane. The beacon looks to be non-functional although it was nice to see the light display still attached at the top. A neat piece of history still standing here!
*NOTE* It is easy to drive up close to this beacon off the highway. Just be observant and respectful of the property owner next door.
