The MKT (Katy) depot was moved from its original location downtown to a spot north of town, on Highway 69 in 1988. It was remodeled and housed a restaurant for several years. It has since fallen into disrepair and is vacant.
The depot has wide overhanging eaves supported by wooden brackets. It has a gable roof, with a small cross gable over the ticket booth. An extension was added to the south end which served as a service station and convenience store. The wood trim was painted red and the walls are a cream colored stucco. Windows are six-over-six double hung. A caboose and passenger coach stand behind the depot, and it appears that a building extension was added so restaurant diners could eat in the coach. Today, unfortunately, the restaurant is gone, the depot is vacant, and the depot is rapidly deteriorating.
BUT, there is hope!! In early 2016, discussions began about moving the depot back to the downtown area and restoring it. It would be an ambitious endeavor and costly. A GoFundMe page has been set up to receive donations, and hopefully, the day will come when this depot stands in its former glory.
