The Bank of Montreal constructed this Beaux-Arts building in 1907 at one of the busiest intersections in Hull: Bridge Street (later known as Du Pont and eventually known as Eddy) and Main Street. By the 1950s, 40 Main Street was usually known as 40 rue Principale.

The Bank of Montreal left the building in 1970. Most recently, pawn brokers used the building. In 2018, the building is vacant.
