The First World War Memorial in the village of Newtyle was unveiled by The Earl of Strathmore on July 3rd 1920. The column style structure was built by John Gray & Sons of Newtyle to a design by George Carnegie of Dundee.
The memorial consists of a segmented sandstone needle on a surrounding stone plinth over a stepped base. The plinth bears bronze plaques on three of its faces with white enamelled lettering. The plaque facing south reads:
'IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF NEWTYLE PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 AND THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945'
The other two plaques on either side list 14 names on each, unusually all the names are mixed from both wars, 20 from World War I, and 8 from World War II.
The memorial can be found on the east side of the main route through the village, the B954 Dundee Road on the junction with North Street.
